Opinion

To all those who have questioned this current disaster being worse than Cyclone Bola, I quote this from the updated Te Ara website: https://nzhistory.govt.nz/page/cyclone-bola-strikes

“The government's repair bill for the cyclone (Bola) was more than $111 million ($260m — 2023 cost).

“In February 2023, Cyclone Bola's death toll and economic cost were tragically surpassed when Cyclone Gabrielle wreaked havoc across the north and east of the North Island.”

For those who are trying to score political points during the nation's recovery efforts I have nothing but scorn and disgust.

For those bending their backs to helping the victims and the recovery, I have nothing but the highest praise, deepest respect and heartfelt thanks.

It is humanity's greatest strength that when extreme adversity strikes, people band together and work long and hard for the welfare of all.

I recognise you and salute you — you set a shining example for now and the future. In gratitude,

Roger Handford
