Picture this ... it's a lazy summer evening and you're snuggled up on a blanket with your besties atop Mount Drury. The Mount towers over you as you kick back and watch a movie under the stars. This is the vision that Kim Cleland has made a reality for this year's Night Owl Cinema, The Summer Sessions.
Building on the success of last year's free event on the Tauranga waterfront, the team is back with a new location and carefully selected movies from Kiwi independent films to cult classics. The first film, Stephen Spielberg's The Goonies opens the season on Saturday, November 8.
The event runs monthly until the closing film on March 14, 2015, where Cleland is organising to have the film powered by bikes. The motivation for this event is to bring the community together to make shared spaces come alive with sound, film and performance.
"Night Owl Cinema is all about getting people together to enjoy our beautiful public spaces," says Cleland. Mount Drury is across the road from Mount Maunganui beach. This event is organised by the community for the community.
Taking inspiration from the ultra-cool Secret Cinema, an experiential cinema event in London, which pulls in huge crowds, Cleland intends to take the film experience beyond the big screen. The first iteration of this will see Leisure Island into Treasure Island and employing a troupe of mime artists for The Artist.
