It's not every day you get to boss someone around at school and not get told off, and Max Schuler plans to make the most of it today.
The Year 9 student "bought" Year 13 student Conor Macfarlane for $50 yesterday as part of a charity slave auction at Otumoetai College
to raise funds for Amnesty International.
Thirteen Year 13 students dressed themselves in paper bags and rags, hopped in a cage, and were auctioned off at lunchtime - raising a grand total of $570.
For Conor, who was purchased by Max and Max's maths teacher and slave auctioneer Mike Shadbolt; today will be a day of back breaking work, and mental agility.
"I don't intend to be moving my legs at all," Max announced.
Piggybacks to and from class are in order and Conor will also be asked questions for Max's maths class.
"We [Mr Shadbolt and I] agreed to share him in maths and get him to answer lots of life questions."
Max also teased he may alter Conor's uniform so he has to wear a skirt.
Dressed in an uncomfortable, rigid looking paper rubbish bag and bare feet, Conor was surprisingly unfazed by his fate.
"Since it's for a good cause I'm happy," he said with a shrug.
Max said he paid $30 of his own hard-earned money mainly to support Amnesty International, but "having a slave is a good advantage".
Otumoetai College's student executive committee first held a charity slave auction last year and it was such a success they decided to do it again.
The highest bid yesterday was $95 for head student Jed Misa by his Year 13 Classics class who all pitched in. All slaves will work for a total of two hours today.
Their masters received a certificate of ownership.
