The police dive squad is due to join the search for a Rotorua fisherman missing for almost 36 hours.

The 24-year-old has been lost at sea since the boat he, his brother-in-law and 10-year-old nephew were in capsized on the Bowentown Bar, Bay of Plenty, on Monday night.

The brother-in-law and nephew were found by another fisherman after they washed ashore. They were treated and discharged from Tauranga Hospital yesterday,

Search and Rescue co-ordinator Sergeant Vince Ranger said the police dive squad flew in this morning and were expected to head to the search area at low tide, depending on sea conditions.

The dive squad's primary search area would focus on an area of about six nautical miles between the Bowentown Bar and where the 4m dinghy was found about three-quarters of a nautical mile north of the Bowentown Bar.

Ranger said shoreline searches would resume at midday along Waihi Beach, the northern rocks and the Bowentown entrance.

No sightings of the missing man were reported overnight, he said.

Ranger said the name of the missing fisherman was unlikely to be released today.
