Excited fans descended on Bay Oval to watch the Northern Knights and Canterbury Kings battle it out during the McDonald's Super Smash Twenty20 round-robin match. We were there to catch the action.

Excited fans descended on Bay Oval to watch the Northern Knights and Canterbury Kings battle it out during the McDonald's Super Smash Twenty20 round-robin match.

The Northern Knights were hosting the Canterbury Kings yesterday after a successful nine-wicket win over the Auckland Aces on Tuesday.

Windy chilly conditions failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the smallish crowd keen to see their local heroes in action.

That included Bev McNaughten, husband Mark, their daughter Katie and three friends who came over from Te Awamutu especially to watch Peter Bocock and Zack Gibson play for the Knights.

"This is Peter's second game for the Northern Knights so we didn't want to miss him and Zack in action. It's a bit chilly and windy today, but we're still having an awesome time," Mrs McNaughten told the Bay of Plenty Times last night.

Mrs McNaughten said the trip over had been well worth it because it appeared the Knights had the upper hand particularly after an "awesome" catch by Te Awamutu-based Mr Bocock.

Other members of the group included Mr Bocock's mother Michelle and Zack Gibson's girlfriend Taylor Karl, also from Te Awamutu.

Mrs McNaughten said although there wasn't heaps of drama on the field there were still plenty of other reasons for her and the group to celebrate.

"It's my husband Mark's 48th birthday today," she said.
