On the menu: Contemporary Asian cuisine, a fusion of east meets west. With vegetarian, gluten-free and paleo options alongside pork belly, octopus balls, beef cheek, salmon and duck, there is something for everyone. The menu is nicely organised into sections for tapas and starters- all designed to share-and mains. There is also a banquet menu available for large groups, and an extensive cocktail menu.

Sitting outside in the evening sun, I order a raspberry, white peach and cinnamon Bellini while my friend goes for the Viola-gin with lemon, sugar and egg white and blueberry rosemary shrub. Refreshing and a little bit naughty, Macau would be perfect for a night out with the girls but we were here for some serious dining.

I'll have: Tuna Tataki ($24 sashimi tuna with watercress, crispy rice,
sweet ginger dressing). Tuna is my go-to and this was delightfully tasty with the crispy rice an interesting texture, like a sort of rice hash brown. Foramain, I had the Grilled King Salmon ($31) with soba noodles, watercress salad, wasabi tabiko dressing). The rich velvety salmon meat was offset by the slight piquancy of the watercress. We shared a side of Wok Fried Vegetables-Chinese broccoli, baby bok choy, sesame oil and Shaoxing wine-a creative mix of sweet and sour which could make a dish in its own right.

She'll have: My friend started with Tempura Prawns ($15 for six with
lemon and seven spice mayonnaise). These would be a perfect accompaniment to afterwork wines and easily shareable, as she found out when I pinched a couple. She followed up with Roast Pork Belly ($26, with kaffir lime and chilli sauce)-crisp-skinned
and stickily succulent.

Value for money: The tapas range from $8 to $15 making them an
affordable accompaniment to drinks if you don't want a full meal, and the starters from $19 to $24 are large and great to share. The starters would easily make a main course with some sides. Mains range from $26 to $33.

To drink: A great drinks menu with bubbles, rose and the usual whites and reds. We liked the European section but in the end stuck to our home turf with a Mills Reef Hawke's Bay Pinot Gris ($39 a bottle). They also offer beers and ciders, juices, smoothies, soft drinks, coffees and frappes.

To finish: My creme brulee was the perfect combination of cream
and crunch and I also dug in to my friend's chocolate mousse which was more like a glass of the most delicious chocolate truffle. Divine.

The staff: Friendly, chatty and our waitress was most helpful advising
us on the size of dishes and desserts-great recommendation.

The verdict: A great addition to Tauranga's waterfront-not only is the food delicious but the environment is funky but relaxed. We will be back for more Bellinis and next time might dare to try the octopus balls.
