Contractors have worked to clear a major slip that closed the highway to traffic in both directions yesterday evening.
The job is expected to be complete just after 6pm.
UPDATED 11.55PM: Motorists are advised to avoid State Highway 29 in the Kaimai Range, which is not expected to be opened again until late this afternoon.
Police said contractors were working to remove the slip, which fell on the lower Kaimais on the Matamata side.

11.27am: Motorists heading to Fieldays are warned to expect delays at Matangi Village where traffic from Auckland is merging with vehicles heading to the event from Hamilton.
The New Zealand Transport Agency are advising drivers to avoid travelling on SH2 west of Te Puke where the wet weather has caused significant deterioration to recent pavement rehabilitation.
10.22am: The Kaimai Range remains closed due to a large slip on the Waikato side.
Alternative routes available are State Highway 2 north (Paeroa and Waihi), SH5 and SH36 (Ngongotaha and Pyes Pa), and SH33 and SH5 (Rotorua and Paengaroa). All these routes remain open but are experiencing heavy traffic volumes due to the SH29 closure.
Drivers can expect delays due to the increased traffic volumes on these roads.
8.40am: Thousands of cubic meters of earth has formed the large slip blocking State Highway 29 highway on the Kaimai Range as firstlight reveals the damage the Bay's wild weather has caused.
A reporter at the slip this morning said a small lane had been formed to help contractor's trucks through but the road was also damaged by large potholes which appeared to have been formed from the poor weather.
EARLIER: Oropi Rd is open again this morning after joining several other roads throughout the Western Bay being closed due to slips and flooding overnight.
Oropi George Rd is reduced to one lane as a slip covers part of the road.
However, State Highway 29 in the Kaimai Range remains closed in both directions.
The road was closed overnight due to a major slip in the lower Kaimais but detours are in place.
A reporter at the scene this morning said traffic at the cordon was badly congested because some motorists were reluctant to pull out into traffic, creating a back log of cars at Tauriko.
The New Zealand Transport Agency ask motorists to avoid using the highway if possible.
It was unclear when SH29 or Te Matai Rd, which was also closed due to a slip, will be open again.
Motorists are urged to drive with caution, particularly along Pyes Pa Rd, which was reduced to one lane yesterday after a slip partially blocked the road.
