Thousands of Bay residents have made submissions and signed petitions against the Government's proposal to cut the recreational snapper catch limit.
Consultation for the Ministry for Primary Industries proposal, which suggests cutting the recreational fishing limit from nine snapper to three in the Bay of Plenty, Auckland and Northland, ends
at 4pm today.
Decoro Fishing Supplies owner Kane Tapper said he had a LegaSea petition in his shop and had received hundreds of signatures.
Mr Tapper took out radio advertising as a way to show his support for LegaSea, the advocacy arm of the New Zealand Sports Fishing Council, as well as encouraging people into his shop. "Out of all the marketing I've done, I've never had a response like this," he said.
New Zealand Sport Fishing Bay of Plenty representative Deryk Nielsen said there had been tremendous interest in the issue. "From our point of view it's one of those defining moments the interest has been huge."
