About 300 people gathered in the Karangahake Gorge to protest against the New Talisman Gold Mines on Sunday.
A Coromandel Watchdog statement said the protesters' message was very clear; there was to be no more mining in Karangahake.
Neighbour to the mine, Mark Beach expressed his anger at not beingproperly consulted by the company and said he was yet to meet a local who had been consulted.

"When I saw the Hauraki District Council had issued them a resource consent I was angry and went to the Council to express my opposition. I was told all I could do now was take it to the High Court which seems like an impossible task for someone like me."
Iwi emphasized the importance of allowing the life supporting abilities of the mine to continue to recover and spoke of the cultural importance of the mountain.
Local Greens Electoral Candidate and long time anti-mining campaigner Catherine Delahunty expressed the Greens commitment to protecting New Zealand's conservation land and condemned the current governments undermining of the Department of Conservation.
A public meeting held on Tuesday was attended by more than 100 at the Paeroa War Memorial hall.
The evening ended with a number of people signing up to join the 'Protect Karangahake' group and a promise by many to put themselves between the mountain and the miners, the statement said.
