Maggie May went in for a trim - and came out with bald patches and raw skin on her neck, chest and backside.
Now the horrified owner of the 3-year-old wheaten terrier is furious and has refused to pay for what what she says is a bungled dog grooming session.
Tauranga woman
Susie Jones says she took Maggie May to pet grooming business Kiwipetz at Fraser Cove for a trim to give the pooch a reprieve from the hot weather.
Ms Jones said Maggie May's last trim at the store had been "fabulous" so she went back and asked for a light trim.
She left the dog there and about an hour later received a phone call from Kiwipetz, asking if she would prefer the leg hair to be left longer than the body. She said she told the caller Maggie May was only to receive a trim.
Ms Jones said she was horrified when she returned two hours after dropping Maggie May off.
She told the assistant to stop immediately.
"I was absolutely disgusted with what I saw," Ms Jones said.
"It so short you couldn't tell what breed she was.
"She had bald patches on her chest, neck and on her behind ... and she had cut off the 'stop' on the top of her head that I had specifically asked her not to touch."
The groomers are standing by their job.
Kiwipetz owner Jody Woodhouse said when Ms Jones dropped off her pet she had asked for "a clip off".
She confirmed Ms Jones was phoned midway through but said the instruction given was to "clip it short".
"When asked how short she wanted the face to be, she said as short as a schnauzer."
Mrs Woodhouse said the blades used on Maggie May were 4F, which leaves 9.5mm of hair. The blades used on her head and neck were 7F, which leaves 3.2mm of hair.
Mrs Woodhouse said staff normally used a 10 blade when grooming a schnauzer, which left 1.6mm of hair.
"The dog also had black skin under its chest, which could make it look shorter, and the hair was also growing in different directions and when it's cut with or against the hair growth, it cuts a little shorter.
"She decided she wanted a show clip and a show clip is completely different from a pet clip.
"We wouldn't have groomed the dog if a show clip was requested and would have referred her to a specialised groomer."
Mrs Woodhouse said the situation was "absolutely unfortunate" and she supported the employee who did the grooming.
"She may have been expecting something different and it's one of those things that you can't please everyone, but it's a real shame when we're absolutely innocent and have done everything that we were asked," she said.
After the incident, Kiwipetz offered to transport Ms Jones and her dog to a groomer specialising in show clips, however, this was refused, Mrs Woodhouse said.
"I know the hair will grow back but that's beside the point," Mrs Jones said.
