People covered in the bright hues of the rainbow danced and laughed their way through this year's Colour Splash at Coronation Park.

People covered in the bright hues of the rainbow danced and laughed their way through this year's Colour Splash.

On Saturday afternoon Tauranga's own Holi Festival of Colours-inspired event took place at Coronation Park.

Inspired by love, peace and good vibes the almost completely free event drew a crowd double that of last year's event to douse themselves with coloured dust and enjoy music.

Bela Reid helped organise the event with husband Dhruva and said there were a lot of smiles on the faces of old and young.

"People get covered in colour and become more relaxed and cut loose in a healthy way - there are no drugs or alcohol here."

The event was catered by One Love vegetarian food, which was offered for free or a koha.

"Where do you get a festival you don't have to pay?

"It's all about uplifting your consciousness and having fun for very little money."

The background of the traditional Holi Festival of Colours in India could get complex but the event was just a fun event based on togetherness, happiness and overcoming race or gender, she said.

The Katikati-based couple held Colour Splash events in Auckland and Whangamata in previous weekends.

HOLI FESTIVAL OF COLOURS
- Festival of love
- An annual Hindu tradition mostly observed in India, Nepal and South Asia but adopted across the world
- Organisers of the Holi believe that colourful powder and loud music intoxicates the people with colour and music so that their religion and social status no longer matter
