Farming course in demand

Rachel Joblin ran a basic computer skills course two years ago that is about to be rolled out nationally.

Bay of Plenty farmers that want to upskill their computer knowledge will be able to take advantage of a nationwide course targeted at understanding new technologies.

The Red Meat Profit Partnership was funding a nationwide rollout of a course designed to help farmers use computers.

Two years ago, Pongaroa-based farm consultant Rachel Joblin ran the first basic computer skills course to meet demand from members of her local community, and the success of that programme had prompted the initiative.

Beef + Lamb New Zealand chief executive Dr Scott Champion said the course fitted with its philosophy of helping farmers develop skills to make use of existing products, rather than inventing new ones.

There was an increasing array of services being offered online.

Having the skills to use them would help farmers make more informed decisions and better manage their businesses, he said.

"Computers are fast becoming an essential farm management tool and through its investment in RMPP, Beef + Lamb New Zealand is pleased to help make these computer courses available to farmers throughout the country."

Ms Joblin's involvement in setting up the computer course happened almost by accident.

She said she was approached by farmers within her community who wanted to develop basic computer skills. She investigated options but found no trainers locally, so decided to do it herself.

The course was aimed at developing the basic skills farmers need to run their businesses. Starting at turning the computer on and understanding what they are seeing, to sending emails and using search engines.

"There are so many 'ah-ha' moments when you see whole new worlds opening up to them."

Many farmers had been relying on family members to use the computer for them but that was not sustainable in a world where online communication was now the norm.

"It's how other people want to communicate with us."

Having a low level of computer skills hindered a farmer's ability to pick up other farm management tools such as Farmax, she said.
