Tauranga architectural designer Brendon Gordon, who makes full use of limited space, cleaned up in regional awards announced at a Mills Reef Winery presentation dinner last night.
Mr Gordon's minimalist but stylish designs helped him win four categories, and finalist placings in three others, in the Architectural Designers New Zealand (ADNZ)/Resene
Waikato and Bay of Plenty awards.
His first win was for a new home up to 250sq m in Grace Rd, The Avenues, praised by the judges for its timeless quality and compact planning that belied its generous feel.
Mr Gordon picked up the multi-unit dwelling win by designing two spacious, luxury apartments (top and bottom) in Harbour Drive, Bureta, overlooking Pilot Bay.
The judges said this was an excellent example of city apartment living which made maximum use of space.
Mr Gordon's kitchen design in the same apartments also came out on top, and in a busy night he collected the residential alterations and additions category for re-designing a home in Kiriwai Place, Matua.
This time, the judges said: "What a cracker. Brendon has built on the original modernist architecture and kept faith. Nothing more than what it is: Simple, liveable and modern."
He was also a finalist in the new home over 250sq m, commercial/industrial and Resene colour categories.
Mr Gordon stayed put while Ben van der Vlugt from Bay Design Architecture picked up the award in the new home over 250 sq m category.
The house in Jess Rd, Plummers Point, showed a mastery of design detail, invoking the Bavarian tradition with a twist of Kiwi, the judges said.
Mr van der Vlugt also won the roof design for the same house. Other Tauranga winners were Andre Laurent of Creative Space Architectural Design for the interior of a new house at The Lakes, Pyes Pa West; and Matt Hodson of Insight Architecture for the distinctive design of the Vogue showhome on the corner of 16th Ave and Fraser St.
