UPDATED 8.55pm: Police have reported five people are dead following a truck and car collision on State Highway 2, near Dawson Rd, Aongatete.

State Highway 2 is closed both ways between Morton Rd and Thompson's Track after a logging truck and car collided around 8.15pm.

Police have warned motorists travelling to Tauranga from Waikato, Auckland or Coromandel they would be unable to get through via Waihi.

Motorists have been advised to travel via the Kaimai summit or Rotorua.

The Serious Crash Unit and Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit are at the scene.

Northern fire communications shift manager Paul Radden said there had been fatalities, though he had no further details.

Fire crews responded from Katikati and Tauranga, as well as a specialist incidents truck with heavy rescue equipment.

Ambulance and police were also at the scene.

Earlier: Reports are coming in of a serious crash on State Highway 2, at the intersection of Dawson Rd in Aongatete.

Dawson Rd is near Morton Estate Winery.

It is understood the road is closed and motorists have been advised to avoid the area.

A police spokeswoman said it appeared a truck and car collided at 8.15pm.

More as information comes to hand.
