Naked ambition was alive and well as males of all shapes and sizes strutted their stuff at auditions for the stage show The Full Monty at Baycourt yesterday.
Matua couple Dave and Lisa Wilson are directing the show - which will be staged at Baycourt from June 6-9 - and hope
to finalise roles within two weeks.
At yesterday's audition was Ben Broughton who is hoping to "break free" from his day job as an IT sales manager.
The 29-year-old father-of-two sung up a storm with Queen's I Want to Break Free as he bid for a lead role in the stage production of the Oscar-winning British classic comedy.
The Full Monty tells the tale of six unemployed Sheffield steelworkers who decide they can make a small fortune by putting on a striptease show _ but to drum up interest they boast they'll take all of their clothes off.
Taking a lead role in the stage version is certainly not for shy and retiring types and Mr Broughton _ while saying he is no exhibitionist _ admits he does not fall into this personality category.
Since moving to Tauranga in 2003, Mr Broughton said he'd taken a break from the stage to get married and to raise two children with his wife, Nicky, but said he had been itching to get back into theatre.
"Being on stage is an exhilarating experience," he said.
"I'm no exhibitionist but having to strip doesn't really worry me, as it's all done in a fun and good taste."
And though Mr Broughton didn't have to take his clothes off at the audition, he had to sing God Defend New Zealand and two songs of his own choice, all without music.
Another hopeful is Craig Wilson, 43, Radioworks advertising sales rep and self-employed entertainment production manager.
Mr Wilson, who has been involved in amateur theatre and musical theatre for 20 years, was a cast member in Tauranga Repertory Theatre's production of Ladies Night four years ago. However, he admits he's a novice when it comes to striptease roles.
"I don't think my voice is strong enough for one of the lead parts, so the chances of me having to strip are pretty slim, thank God," he added.
Director Dave Wilson said he was particularly keen for someone to play Horse _ the 40-year-old living the legend of the well-endowed black man.
There are also roles for 15 other males and females. Anyone interested in can call 576-0536 or email jumby@xtra.co.nz
