Tauranga's day care centre for the elderly has been saved from closure after the Presbyterian Church offered a much-needed lifeline.
Carruth Day Care centre, currently operating in Melrose Lifestyle Care and Village, was set to close after its provider, Oceania Group, withdrew its support in August.
Desperate attempts were made to keep the much needed service in operation. With assistance from the Bay of Plenty Health Board, a suitable provider was found - Enliven Tauranga, run by Presbyterian Support Northern.
Team leader at Carruth Day Care centre, Margaret Bridgman, was ecstatic to hear the centre was given a second chance.
"We're absolutely delighted. The clients are very happy someone picked it up and this is the best outcome possible."
Carruth Day Care centre will continue at Melrose Lifestyle Care and Village until December 3. The new service will begin operating at Bethlehem Community Church on 6 December.
Friends of Carruth member Graeme Lingard was also happy to see the centre continue operating.
"I'm absolutely delighted. It's such a vital service in the community and the staff there do a fantastic job."
Mr Lingard congratulated Enliven Tauranga for taking up the role. "We're all delighted they're coming on board. We have an ageing population and there is an important need for it so this is very good news."
Enliven Tauranga currently offer a range of services for elderly people in the Western Bay.
The organisation works with people with low to high and complex needs and provide a wide range of support in clients' homes and communities, which include their Day Programmes.
