Logan Gies screamed so loud when he impaled his leg in a bike accident that a neighbour half a kilometre away heard him and came running.
The Mount Maunganui College student had just stabbed the brake lever of his bike through his thigh - so it was no surprise he was in agony.
The 13-year-old said he had never felt pain like it when the freak accident happened at 1.15pm on Wednesday.
He was out riding his bike with his brothers Hayden, 11, and Zac, 9, when he fell. "I was just biking along and then I went over this little jump. The handle bar got turned inward and my leg got caught between the handle bar and the brakes," he told the Bay of Plenty Times.
"It was stuck in there, it was burning. I told my brother to help me pull it out. He tried to pull it out, there was all this blood like oozing out. I was like screaming, loud as."
The lever was embedded more than 5cm into his thigh.
Brother Hayden managed to rip it out and Logan limped towards the neighbour to get help, with blood flowing down his leg.
When he got home, the Papamoa teenager's mother Debbie quickly took him to a doctor.
"I knew it was pretty bad - when something like that goes in there, that was a bit of force," Mrs Gies said.
She said she was shocked to see the amount of blood coming from her son's leg and covered it up very quickly. "I'm not good with blood. That's one of the rules in the house - you can get hurt as long as there's no blood and he broke that one yesterday," she said, laughing.
Little did they know the injury was far more serious than they anticipated.
"They just looked at it and it was near a big artery so if they played with it blood could've come out of it more and more," Logan said. "The blood was all thick and dark red."
St John Ambulance transported Logan to Tauranga Hospital, where he spent a couple of hours getting patched up.
Seven stitches later and on a pair of crutches, Logan is feeling pretty good all things considered. "I couldn't really walk [on Wednesday] so I had to use the crutches, because it was sore as that day."
Logan has resigned himself to spending a lot of time playing Playstation now, but will still be back at school on Monday.
As for the bike, Logan plans to get back on it as soon as possible.
