Boy hit by car in Gate Pa

An 11-year-old boy has been taken to Tauranga Hospital after being hit by a car in Gate Pa this morning.

Police are at the intersection of Clarke St and Cook St where a car with a smashed windscreen and a child's bike with a crushed wheel can be seen.

A reporter at the scene said family members could be seen crying.

A Clarke St resident said she heard a bang and looked over the fence to see a boy lying on the road "which was absolutely horrible".

She raced out to help the boy using her first aid training to look after him until an ambulance arrived.

The woman said the boy had a sore neck, back and legs and had blood on his cheek and eye. His bike was dented and the driver's windshield was caved in.

The boy was taken to hospital for assessment.

The driver was visibly shaken by the crash, the resident said.

"It's just this area. The school's just up the road. People fly up and down, especially around this corner which is a blind corner."

She said speed bumps were needed to slow traffic down.
