Flexible slat bed maker Design Mobel has maintained its standing as one of Western Bay's outstanding companies by winning the regional supreme business of the year award last night.
It was the second time in six years that Design Mobel had won the big prize in the Westpac Tauranga Regional Business Awards.
In presenting the trophy, Westpac general manager business banking Bruce McLachlan told 500 guests at the glitzy gala dinner that Design Mobel had carved out an established reputation in New Zealand and Australia.
He said Design Mobel had established a pattern of increasing revenue and profitability over the last three years and it's hard to fault them.
"They have a sound commercial approach, and excellence in their business systems, personnel and management, and identifying their target markets."
The Greerton-based company was started by Dave Macfarlane 16 years ago. Nearly two years ago Mr Macfarlane handed over the reins to new managing director Quentin Quin.
Design Mobel has since bought out its main New Zealand rival Restwood and secured sustainable supply rights to the native timber on the East Coast.
Restwood's operations in Hamilton were merged with Design Mobel's operations in Maleme St, producing a 15 per cent increase in production over the past 12 months.
Design Mobel produces about 5000 slat beds a year, up from 3800 15 months ago, 9000 mattresses and furniture pieces.
The company, which employs 85 staff, has also increased its product range by making sofa beds and recliner beds for the elderly.
Mr Quin has his sights on expanding the "difficult" Australian market. Over the years Design Mobel has gradually moved from an enthusiastic owner-operated business to a considered corporate structure, while retaining the staff culture.
