A car has rolled down a ditch in Waihi tonight, giving the young driver and their occupant a big fright.

Police were called to Waihi Beach Rd around 7pm where a car had driven into a ditch.

The driver and passenger, a young male and female, were not injured in the crash.

The driver had hit a 100km/h sign post before ending up in the ditch next to a paddock on Waihi Beach Rd.

Senior constable Wayne Harper said both people were lucky not to get hurt.

"Hitting the sign was probably what got the car to slow down and save them.

"Otherwise it could have been worse," he said.

Police had not determined the exact cause of the accident but said alcohol was not involved.

Constable Andrew Cochrane said the driver had probably become distracted from the road.
