Not since the early 80s could Kiwis catch a movie for under a fiver but that is set to change today when www.GrabOne.co.nz launches in Tauranga.
To mark the launch, the new website is winding back the clocks to offer film fans the cheapest price in more than 25 years with
$5 tickets at Bay City Cinemas.
Tauranga residents will be able to save up to 90 per cent on everything from movie tickets to restaurant outings, thanks to the website, which offers huge discounts for activities around the Bay.
The website is jointly owned by creator Shane Bradley and media company APN.
"From cinemas, spas and new restaurants we work with the best local businesses to offer one deal every day at a crazy price," Mr Bradley said.
The site was launched in Auckland on July 7 and is now being rolled out across the country. Tauranga is the sixth out of 16 regions to able to access deals.
Mr Bradley said GrabOne had already saved $2 million for the the site's users in the short time it had been up and running.
On GrabOne's first day in Auckland, more than 13,000 movie tickets were sold. Other deals have included 7500 Fullers ferry tickets and 1000 buffet meals.
Because there are so many GrabOne members, the company is able to secure discounts of between 50 to 90 per cent.
"We buy together and save together," Mr Bradley said.
Members are encouraged to check the website every day to see what the new deal is, or sign up for daily email alerts.
When members see a deal they like, they enter their name and credit card number to secure their GrabOne coupon. Members are not charged unless enough people join in for the deal to activate. When the minimum number is reached, the deal is activated. Members are then sent a coupon, which they can print and use like cash.
"The site works because everyone wins," Mr Bradley said.
Social media has seen the offers fly out the door, with people sending out tweets and updating their status to pass on the deals.
"Local business gets a great push through social media and viral marketing, while our customers benefit from the very best deals available on some incredible experiences and services," Mr Bradley said.
Today's launch deal is $5 movie tickets from Bay City Cinemas. Go to www.grabone.co.nz. Each deal is available to the public for 24 hours.
