Nearly 1000 submissions have been received about the spelling of the Wanganui District's name.
Wanganui District Council voted in December to ask the New Zealand Geographic Board to change the name of the district from Wanganui to Whanganui.
The council's consultation period opened just over a fortnight ago and so far council has received about 930 online submissions and 32 hard copy submissions.
The Geographic Board will carry out public consultation on the possible change this year but the council decided to run its own public consultation process. Council will collate the submissions it receives and send them to the Geographic Board.
The proposal for adding the 'H' to the name of the district is separate to previous proposals for the Whanganui National Park, Whanganui River and the optional Whanganui or Wanganui for the urban part of the district.
Online submissions to the council can be made through the council's website www.wanganui.govt.nz or by written submission by collecting a copy of the survey from the council building on Guyton St, the Davis Central City Library or the Gonville Cafe Library.
Submissions close at 5pm on Friday, February 13.
