Mrs Burkett's connection with St John began before she was born. Her mother and grandmother were both St John members and decided she would follow their lead.
She initially joined the St John youth programme in Christchurch and, as she grew up, she progressed through the programme, taking part in competitions and learning new skills.
As an adult member of St John, she has worked in many roles ranging from volunteer ambulance officer, community, sports and entertainment events first aider, tutor and divisional manager.
Her current focus is the role of deputy chair of St John Wanganui area committee. In this role, she's been very much involved in helping set up the new St John opportunity shop, which opened recently.
She's never been employed by St John, but has always worked as a volunteer.
Mrs Burkett said one of the most gratifying things about her St John service was working with young people.
"For me, satisfaction comes when former cadets approach me and tell me that if it wasn't for St John they wouldn't be doing what they are doing today."
As for her honour, she described it as "a privilege ... I'm still amazed by it".
Mrs Burkett will officially be awarded the title of Commander of the Order of St John at an investiture ceremony in 2015.
