It's their party and they'll cry if they want to.
Brazil may have been obliterated by Germany in their World Cup semifinal yesterday, but the sadness didn't dull the festivities.
Wanganui man Dan Benson was in Rio watching the match among the home fans on Copacabana Beach. But through the pain, the party would continue, he said. Brazil watched the Germans put seven goals past them yesterday in a game that had fans in tears.
"[There's a] massive upset population, but surprisingly still a party tonight," Mr Benson told the Chronicle from Rio yesterday. "There's samba and music everywhere."
Mr Benson said he couldn't picture the scene replicated in New Zealand.
"It's much different than I can imagine the All Blacks losing in a semifinal may have been. There are some very happy and accepting people."
He said the scoreline, not the result, had been the surprise.
"To be honest, Germany were always the favourite, but never saw 7-1 coming. Neymar was missed, but I feel they would have lost anyway."
Mr Benson was now backing the Netherlands to take the title.
But first: "We're heading off to a party now - street parties all round."
