Take one old school chair. Turn it into a piece of art.
That was the simple brief given to 35 artists who volunteered to take part in The Chair Project, a special exhibition that will run alongside the Artists Open Studios Whanganui, on March 22-23 and 29-30.
What came out of that brief was limited only by the artists' creativity, and ranges from the tiny and delicate to the monstrous and elaborate.
The project originated with Waverley artists Lisa and Jimi Walsh, who bought the former Scouts' hall in Waverley. With the hall came old-fashioned school chairs that the Walshes did not know what to do with.
Being artists, they decided to turn them into a work of art and so The Chair Project was born.
