Tie down the trampoline, Wanganui could be in for some bad weather this weekend.
Wanganui District Council is warning Wanganui residents to prepare for potentially severe weather with Cyclone Lusi moving in on Saturday or early Sunday.
The cyclone is expected to transition into sub-tropical weather before reaching New Zealand but is still expected to be a dangerous storm.
MetService has issued a severe weather watch for Northland, Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula, Waikato, Bay of Plenty Rotorua, Gisborne, Taumaranui, Taupo, and Taihape.
Wanganui District Civil Defence & Emergency Management is advising people to keep up to date with official warnings and forecasts.
WDC emergency manager Matthew Smith said the Emergency Management Committee met on Wednesday and was briefed on the weather for this weekend.
"We will be passing updated information between the emergency response organisations as the week progresses and monitoring the situation," Mr Smith said.
He advised people to keep themselves updated on the progress of Cyclone Lusi and adjust their plans accordingly, and he suggested that they took the time now to secure or remove any items that could become airborne during high winds.
The MetService forecast for tomorrow shows easterlies in Wanganui turning into gales and rain developing, with a high of 23C and a low of 16 overnight.
Sunday should see rain easing to showers and the wind dropping to a strong northerly, and temperatures between 16 and 28.
