"This was witnessed by a member of the public and police called," said Judge Matheson.
The second incident happened in the early hours of October 17 when the man picked up two people from a house. While driving he became "agitated" and one of them asked him to stop and let them out so they could walk home.
When the man refused the complainant pulled on the handbrake. At that point the man began demanding money from the complainants.
When one reached for the passenger door handle the man grabbed him and bit his head. The defendant then pulled out a piece of driftwood from somewhere in the car and hit the complainant across the side of the torso with it.
When the complainants escaped the vehicle the man accelerated towards one of them, but missed and hit a tree.
He emerged from the car with a knife, then took a second one from inside the car and began advancing towards the complainants, saying to one of them: "I'm going to kill you, boy," and to the other: "I'm going to kill you, too, *****."
It was at this point the man began performing the haka and advancing towards the complainants. He continued following them down the street.
Police arrived shortly after and a Taser was used on him before he was arrested.
One of the complainants had bite marks to the head and a large welt, but neither required medical treatment.
"That's a sad narration of events," said Judge Matheson.
"Clearly things got totally out of control on that day."
He sentenced the man to 12 months' imprisonment, with standard release conditions.
