Richard Tonks, coach of Olympic single sculls champion Rob Waddell, has been appointed head of Rowing New Zealand's high-performance programme.
Tonks' appointment means there is no place for the incumbent high-performance coach, Steve Gunn, whose contract expires in January.
Tonks, who had been chased by other countries for his signature since the Olympics, will primarily be in charge of preparing a team for the 2004 Olympic Games and coaching crews annually for the world championships and other world events.
RNZ high-performance commissioner Barrie Mabbott said it had been resolved to appoint only one coach and there was no place for Gunn, who had coached the women's eight for the past two years
