Western Force halfback and former All Black Alby Mathewson has signed as injury cover for provincial side Canterbury.

Mathewson, 30, will replace incumbent Canterbury halfback Mitchell Drummond, who broke his leg in training last week.

He played four Tests for the All Blacks in 2010 and has previously played for the Hurricanes and Blues.

"We know that he will have a really positive contribution to make with his immense experience as a player," Canterbury coach Scott Robertson said.
