Rotorua police are aware of possible online sales of illegal synthetic cannabis, says a senior officer.
A story in the Sunday Star-Times yesterday reported synthetic cannabis was still available to buy from sellers advertising on social media sites, such as Facebook, despite being banned last month.
It said a seller advertising on a Rotorua Facebook page had offered an ounce of synthetics for $150, or $50 for a bag.
Rotorua police alcohol harm reduction supervisor Sergeant Mike Membery told the Rotorua Daily Post yesterday police were aware of the online sales.
"There is talk around the streets that it is happening but our inquiries have suggested it could be a lot of talk and not much substance," he said.
"We have been following up our information but no one has been prosecuted yet."
Illegal marijuana was also on sale on social media sites.
Mr Membery said it was not known how much synthetic cannabis was available on the street but the new law seemed to be effective.
"We have not had the incidents, especially with children, that we were having prior to the law change," he said.
Mr Membery said anyone with information on online sales should call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 anonymously, or contact the Rotorua police station.
Following the Psychoactive Substances Act, it is illegal for anyone to sell or buy synthetic cannabis.
The penalty is a $500 fine for personal use, or two years prison for supply. A company can be fined up to $50,000.
