A new tourism strategy aims to increase overseas tourist spending in Northland by $130 million by 2008.
The Northland Tourism Strategy's major theme is to get Northland businesses and organisations involved in tourism working together and endorsing the "Northland Naturally - First Region of New Zealand" brand.
The area's prime attractions include the Twin Coast Discovery Highway Touring route, which takes in key tourist sites such as the Waipoua Forest, home of the ancient kauri Tane Mahuta, the Kai Iwi Lakes and the Bay of Islands Heritage Park.
Tourism Strategy Steering Group chairman Mike Simm said the strategy was "quite simply the best regional tourism strategy in New Zealand".
The region wants to further develop the international tourist market by targeting Asian tourists by promoting the region in Singapore and Japan.
"They know of New Zealand but have never visited Northland. On average, they spend more per person per day than Kiwis," Mr Simm said.
