Cyclists are being encouraged onto a busy road with cycle lanes which narrows to share a narrow one-lane bridge with motorists.
The road between Hastings and Napier is being widened to make way for more cyclists, despite a lack of plans for the narrow one-lane bridge over which they will have to ride.
The widening of Brookfields Rd, to the east of its intersection with Gilbertson Rd, started on May 1, just three weeks after a cyclist died in a collision with a truck on the same stretch.
The work, scheduled to be completed by the end of next month, is part of the Urban Cycleway Programme (UCP) plan, which identifies the Sandy Rd-Brookfields Rd connection as the preferred cycle route between Napier and Hastings and earmarks it for cycling-related improvements.
