A 20-year-old man has been remanded in custody on charges arising from Thursday morning's fatal crash in Kaitaia.
Police opposed bail and no application was made to the Kaitaia District Court.
JP Eric Shackleton granted name suppression at the request of duty solicitor Michael Powell.
The man is charged with driving with excess alcohol - 936 micrograms per litre of breath - causing death, failing to ascertain injury or death, and driving while disqualified. He is also charged with burglary at Ahipara in August, 2015.
Powell said the defendant had applied for legal aid.
