A woman injured in a fatal car crash on State Highway 1 is now in a stable condition in hospital.

The woman, in her 80s, was one of two people injured in a three-car crash, north of Auckland, just after 4.30pm yesterday.

The woman was flown to Auckland City Hospital in a serious condition.

This afternoon, a hospital spokeswoman said she was now in a stable condition.

A male driver of the vehicle in which the woman was a passenger died at the scene.

His name has not yet been released. The driver of the second vehicle suffered moderate injuries and was taken to a medical centre in Wellsford.

Police said the driver of the third vehicle was uninjured.
