The main highway north of Wellington has reopened after a serious truck crash blocked the road earlier this morning.
A man was airlifted to Wellington Hospital with serious injuries after a northbound truck crossed the centre line and collided with a tree on State Highway 1 south of Paekakariki.
Light vehicles were diverted over the Paekakariki Hill Rd for several hours while the police serious crash unit investigated.
An ambulance spokeswoman said a man was flown by rescue helicopter to Wellington Hospital in a serious condition.
A police spokeswoman said the accident, which happened at 3.10am near the Fisherman's Table restaurant, did not involve any other vehicles.
Motorists were warned traffic was heavy heading south as a result of the crash and to expect a slow journey.
