Six people were injured, two critically, in a head-on crash in Waikato this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the crash at the intersection of State Highway 2 and Rawiri Rd in Mangatawhiri shortly after 4.30pm, Fire Service northern communication shift manager Colin Underdown said.

One person was trapped in a vehicle and had to be cut free, he said.

St John Ambulance spokeswoman Victoria Hawkins said six people were injured and taken to Middlemore Hospital.

Two were in a critical condition, one was seriously injured and three suffered moderate injuries.

A 68 year-old man with face and chest injuries and a woman with multiple fractures and abdominal injuries were flown to Middlemore Hospital in the Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter after treatment at the scene by St John Paramedics.

The Westpac Auckland helicopter also flew a patient to Middlemore hospital.
