A man has been arrested after shots were fired at a small settlement north of Napier this morning.

A statement issued by police said a man was being spoken to after he prompted an armed offenders callout to the small rural settlement of Waikoau.

Police were called to a house at about 11.20am responding to a woman who said she had been assaulted by her partner and a shot had been fired.

The woman escaped to safety at a nearby property. She had been assaulted physically but it was yet to be established if the shot was fired at her.

It is believed the woman suffered minor injuries as a result of the assault.

The man was located at a house and was arrested without incident about two hours later at 1.30pm.

The man is now in custody and being spoken to by police. A cordon at the intersection of SH2 and Waikoau Rd has now been lifted.
