A man's been charged with assault, after a police officer was hit during a routine bail check in Pukekohe today.

The police officer went to a Pukekohe address this morning, knocked on the door, and was hit in the face.

It sparked a major police callout, with the Armed Offenders Squad, the eagle helicopter and the dog squad heading straight there.

A woman at the nearby pools saw police rushing to the scene, and says her friend called to see if she was okay... because the Parkside Special School and a nearby kindergarten were going into lockdown.

The police officer's suffered facial injuries, but is otherwise fine.
