One person is in a serious condition and four others are injured after a crash in the Kauaeranga Valley, behind Thames.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 2.30pm.

A St John spokeswoman said one person had serious injuries, one had moderate injuries and three others had minor injuries.

All patients were taken to Thames Hospital.

A witness said they saw two St John rapid response vehicles, two police cars, a fire engine and an ambulance head up Kauaeranga Valley Rd.

A Fire Service spokesman said initial reports said the car had driven off a bridge on the narrow, windy road.

But when staff arrived at the scene they found the car had driven off a bank.

He said staff assisted with first aid, before they were transported by ambulance.
