A man has been taken to hospital after a diving accident in Northland this afternoon.

Ambulance, fire, police and a rescue helicopter rushed to the Kai Iwi Lakes camping ground in Omamari, about 30 minutes north of Dargaville, about 1.30pm.

Police were unsure how the diver got into trouble, but confirmed he was in a serious condition.

The summer water death toll rose to nine on Friday.
