Parnell Rd.
The Transport Agency is widening the Southern Motorway with an additional northbound lane from Ellerslie-Panmure Highway on-ramp to just after the main highway overbridge. The panels are sound and safety barriers.
The cost of the motorway widening is $12 million. It is due for completion in March next year.
On the rail tracks parallel to Tamaki Drive, near where the road bridge goes over the lines to The Strand, I've noticed a couple of handsome-looking steam locos and wondered if you could tell me if they're here to be restored? Dave Bennett, Auckland.
These engines, originally from South Africa, are the property of Mainline Steam, a privately owned heritage train organisation.
The engines are awaiting removal to a new home, the location of which is still undecided, after the lease on the Parnell site was terminated.
All the restoration is being done by volunteers. For more information on these and other engines visit the website at mainlinesteam.co.nz
