Orakei Post Centre Superette owner Jay Patel was unloading his car outside his shop - just four doors down - when he saw the car pull up.
He said the driver, a workman who had ducked down to the bakery for lunch, pulled into the carpark in front of the bakery and put his foot on the accelerator instead of the brake. It went through the glass with a glass-shattering bang, he said.
"I saw the car go into the shop so I just ran to the car. I thought something had happened to the driver but he was ok, just a bit shaken up. Thank god nobody was hurt, that's the main thing.
"I pulled the driver out...[The car] was initially halfway into the shop but then we backed it back onto the footpath.
"I think he just missed, instead of putting his foot on the brake it might have slipped onto the accelerator and ploughed into the shop," he said.
Mr Patel understood the car belonged to one of the driver's workmates.
