Police have charged a Gisborne woman with manslaughter in relation to the death of a seven-week-old baby boy who died in Gisborne Hospital in December last year.
The woman is in her late teens.
"The charge follows a lengthy inquiry that was started soon after we were alerted about the child's injuries by hospital staff," said Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Scott.
"It's alleged the baby died from non-accidental injuries, sustained prior to his being admitted to hospital."
Detective Senior Sergeant Scott said it was the type of inquiry where extra care was essential.
"It's the sort of inquiry that takes time.
"There was a considerable amount of forensic work done and that takes time."
Police are unable to provide further details of the child's injuries because the matter is now before the court.
The charged woman made an initial appearance in Gisborne District Court yesterday.
"We did not oppose bail."
