Strong gales set to die down across the north

The strongest wind gusts around north Auckland, Tauranga and the Coromandel will ease by mid-morning according to MetService.

Wind gusts of 100km/h have been recorded in southern parts of Coromandel overnight, while Tauranga has experienced gusts of 95 km/h.

Earlier this morning gusts of 90 km/h were recorded in Whangaparaoa, north of Auckland.

MetService meteorologist Ciaran Doolin said the strong winds gusts would ease this morning, and the winds die down by tomorrow.

"We had a watch out for strong gusts around Coromandel and Western Bay of Plenty... The westerly gale could get quite severe."

A south-westerly wind in Auckland with strong gusts had the New Zealand Transport Agency issuing a warning for motorists to take care on the Harbour Bridge.

Mr Doolin said the worst of the winds had passed.

"The very strong gusts are likely to ease around the mid-morning."

The trend for the rest of the week is for the weather to become calm and fine for the weekend.
