Murder charge laid over Taupo death

A fourth man has been charged in connection with the death of a teenager in Taupo on Friday.

Wiremu Birch, 19, is believed to have been stabbed during a fight, and died on the way to hospital.

A 30-year-old man from Taupo has been charged with his murder after being arrested in the town earlier today. He will appear before Rotorua District Court tomorrow morning. Three other men have been charged with grievous bodily harm.

An examination of the scene and a post-mortem examination of Mr Birch have now been completed, police said. No results have been released.

Officers have appealed for anyone in the area of Rifle Range Road, Hinekura Avenue or Hinemoa Avenue, Taupo, who saw or heard anything suspicious between 2.30am and 3.30am on Friday to come forward.
