On Thursday 9 October, Auckland Council released its state of the environment report, 'The Health of Auckland's Natural Environment In 2015.' The report presents the current and potential environmental issues, recent changes, and long term trends in Auckland. Delivered by Auckland Councils Research and Evaluation Unit (RIMU), this is the
latest scientific data analysis since the previous report in 2010.
As a 5-yearly analysis of Auckland's natural environment, the report provides in-depth information, which is outlined and broken down over four areas: Climate, Air, Land, and Water.
This is the first comprehensive data analysis since 2010, and it has warranted mixed results. "The report shows that there have been some improvements in our air quality and localised successes for native biodiversity. Overall, however, there has been a continued decline in marine and freshwater environments," says Dr. Megan Carbines, Senior RIMU Scientist.
Auckland's environment faces a wide range of challenges, especially as urban Auckland continues to grow. Auckland is on a mission to become the world's most livable city, and aims to reach that goal by addressing the health of the environment and creating a green city. Mayor Len Brown describes the report as a call to action for those who live in and love Auckland. "There is only one Auckland, and as we grow we must grow greener," says Brown.
