Tauranga Boys'
Tauranga Boys' College started the volleyball year with a match against Otumoetai senior A last Thursday. As it was the first game, the team didn't know what to expect, but claimed the first set, with Max Schroder playing well.
Otumoetai took the second set as Tauranga Boys' standards slipped, with passes not sticking and hits not going in. Otumoetai ended up winning as time ran out before the third set could start. Schroder was named the player of the match.
Tauranga Boys' headed to Palmerston North on Sunday for the Super 8 volleyball competition.
In Tauranga Boys' first match, against the Palmerston North B, the boys scored a solid 3-0 win to get the tournament under way. The second match of the tournament was against Hastings Boys High. With help from Hiki Ngata and Dan Looker, TBC went to a 2-0 lead.
Suddenly the Tauranga boys found themselves in a fifth-set decider and the passes were not as good as at the start of the match, meaning setters were having a hard job getting into position. Eventually, TBC went down 3-2.
The third and final pool game was against Hamilton Boys, in which Tauranga Boys were too strong and put them away 3-0.
The next day was finals day. Tauranga Boys were up against Palmerston North Boys' A, with a convincing 3-0 win giving them a shot at winning the Super 8 title.
The final, later on, was against a strong Napier Boys' A team. TBC played their best volleyball all tournament, with some nice passing, setting and strong sliding, as well as some great defence, earning a 2-0 lead.
However in the third set Napier played strongly and Tauranga's intensity dropped, giving Napier the set. But TBC came out firing in the fourth and lifted the intensity that was lacking in the third, taking a 3-1 win and the Super 8 title.
Tauranga Boys' College had their annual swimming sports on February 22. Swimmers wore their house colour on their caps so there was plenty of support poolside from fellow house members. Halberg house looked the team to beat early on as they had the greatest numbers for the morning events. Aquinas College
The triathlon season is well under way at Aquinas College with a Year 8 girls' team proving invincible at the Waikato/Bay of Plenty teams' triathlon last week. Michelle Dykes, Dana Welton and Kimberley D'mello took out first place at Lake Karapiro.
Performing for Aquinas for the first time at the event, the Year 7 Boys' team (Josef Schuler, Sean Dykes and Jarod Schneebeli) also did exceptionally well to finish second.
Aquinas College teacher in charge of multisport Shem Banbury said it was the first major teams' triathlon of the year and it was pleasing to get such a high number of first-time teams at the event. He praised the Aquinas students for performing so well, often against more experienced, better-resourced teams.
Top placings were also enjoyed by Aquinas students at the Bay individual triathlon at Ohope late last month. James Sharp finished second in the under-14 boys' race and Lili Crombie fifth in the under-14 girls'. Over the same weekend, Alice continued her good season with a third in a strong field at the Contact triathlon in Takapuna.

Our senior A boys' and girls' sides each had one loss during the weekend. This put the boys' team out of the top five and the girls out of the top 10.
With qualifying rounds over the next three weekends, the teams are all striving to regain placings. Our senior B boys' team, made up of Year 10 students, provided a highlight, taking critical sets off Tauranga Boys' B and Western Heights A to make it to the top 10.
Katikati College
Our first XI played Rotorua Boys' High at Waipuna Park at the weekend. Katikati won the toss and batted, achieving what seemed a below-par 166, Jacob Morton scoring 36. But Katikati kicked into top gear with the ball.
Brody Gilroy's second over snared both Rotorua openers, then Louie Darvill's amazing spell started, collecting a rare hat-trick. By the time Brody and Louie had finished their opening spell, Rotorua were 26-8, Louie taking 5-20 and Brody 3-14.
Katikati showed no mercy, Mark Telford collecting the final two wickets with two blinding catches from captain Caleb Williams to have Rotorua all out for 55.
