UPDATED 2.19pm: The section of State Highway 2 at Te Puna which was closed this morning has now been re-opened.
The section of highway between Clarke Rd and Te Puna Station Rd was closed after a diesel spill spread across the road in wet weather this morning.
Police advised the road would be closed for several hours.
An Inroads spokeswoman said the road was opened again just after 12pm.
EARLIER 10.18am: State Highway 2 at Te Puna will be closed for several hours after a diesel spill near Clarke Rd this morning.
Police have just announced the spill will take several hours to clean up.
Traffic is being diverted down Te Puna Station Rd, near the Wairoa Bridge, and Clarke Rd on SH2.
EARLIER: Motorists are being advised to take extra caution on State Highway 2 near Te Puna after a diesel spill.
The spill happened about 8.30am.
Acting Senior Sergeant Wayne Hunter said traffic was being diverted down Te Puna Station Rd as police waited for contractors to clean it up.
Mr Hunter said the spill was made worse by the wet weather and advised drivers to take it easy on Bay roads.
