The community in Waverley is a generous bunch, especially when it comes to its local rugby club.

Last Friday a fundraiser for the Border Rugby Club netted $35,000 to help with a small pre-season tour of Australia in late February-early March.

Border premier team managers Chris Amon and Josh Perry, with help from other club members, organised the fundraiser canvassing local businesses, individuals and several generous outsiders to donate goods for an auction at the Waverley Golf Club.

The auction followed a fundraising golf tournament during the day that attracted 23 teams of four and a large band of supporters who stayed on for the auction.

Amon said the result was "absolutely outstanding" and showed just how close knit the Waverley community was when it came to the needs of local organisations and clubs.

"We had people donating stays at beach baches for auction and all manner of other items. We also had two All Blacks jerseys and one each from the Chiefs and Hurricanes. They were all signed and we did them up properly encasing them in specially made cabinets," Amon said.

"The first All Blacks jersey fetched $1300 and the second $3000, but we raised much of the money from items donated by local businesses, including some from Wanganui and beyond. We are aiming to send a team, not necessarily the premier side, on a pre-season tour in Australia early next year, but the money raised may also act as an attraction to any new players considering joining Border. The golf club also benefited through the bar and the tournament. Thanks to the generosity of the Waverley community - we are very grateful."
