Underdogs go on the road

There is still a mathematical possibility of three Whanganui club teams making the semifinals for the second annual Coastal Cup competition when the final round robin of games is completed this afternoon.

However, only the table-topping Property Brokers United are guaranteed to be there, heading into their home game with third placed Weraroa, who fell back into the dangerzone after they were leading the competition until being beaten by 148 runs against Paraparaumu last week.

Set a daunting 283-9 at Kena Kena Park, Weraroa was bowled out for 135.

Meanwhile, Levin Old Boys were able to leap frog St Johns Tech into fourth spot as a result of their 240 run massacre of Kapiti Old Boys at Donnelly Park, scoring 318-7 and then bowling out their hapless neighbours for 78.

It means Tech and sixth-placed Matt Burke Engineering Marton Saracens both have very tough assignments today.

Tech head to Donnelly Park to meet Levin in the battle for fourth spot, while Marton could also creep into the playoffs if they can somehow upset Paraparaumu at Kena Kena Park, while hoping Weraroa and Levin also lose.

Marton swept the board against their fellow Whanganui teams with three victories, but have lost all their matches against the Horowhenua-Kapiti clubs.

Tech was the only Whanganui team to make the semifinals last year, barely scrapping into fourth spot, but then pulled out two tremendous upsets over Weraroa and Levin to win the inaugural title.

In the other game today, winless Marist host Kapiti at Victoria Park.
